WHITMAN (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) An adult was killed and a girl was injured after they were hit by a pickup truck in Whitman on Sunday.

The incident occurred around 3 p.m. on Temple Street. Edward W. Cordwell Jr., 38, of Whitman, and an unidentified female child were struck by a 2004 Dodge Ram pick-up driven by 46-year-old Richard Brown, of Attleboro.

Whitman Fire arrived to the scene and immediately requested two helicopters so that Cordwell and the child could be flown to the hospital. Cordwell was instead taken to Brockton Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The child was flown to a Boston area hospital for treatment. While waiting for the helicopter, the child regained consciousness and was speaking to emergency personnel.

Officials did confirm that Cordwell was not the girl's father.

Sources told FOX 25 that Brown is not a firefighter, despite having firefighter license plates on the truck. His license was suspended indefinitely on Monday by the Registrar of Motor Vehicles.

Brown has not been charged.

An investigation is ongoing.
