Posted: Updated:

HOLYOKE (AP) - Holyoke police have arrested a West Springfield man they say left his two toddlers in the car as he went to buy heroin.

Police at first didn't know the 1-year-old boy and 3-year-old girl were in the car when Pavil Lavrinenko was spotted in an area known for drug activity.

Police tell WSHM-TV (http://bit.ly/OnDj68 ) the 25-year-old man spent about 10 minutes away from his car, which was sitting in direct sunlight with the engine running.

It wasn't until he was pulled over on Friday that police noticed children in the vehicle. Police say he even appeared the sniff the drugs while driving.

Lavrinenko was charged with possession of a class A substance and child endangerment.

State child welfare authorities took custody of the children.
