LOWELL (AP) - A Tyngsborough man has pleaded not guilty to stabbing his former girlfriend in Lowell.
Prosecutors said 61-year-old Peter Yates was ordered held on $50,000 cash bail after his arraignment Monday in Lowell District Court on charges of armed assault to murder and assault and battery. His bail in a drunken driving case was revoked.
The Lowell Sun reports Yates' attorney had argued for $2,000 cash bail, saying his client is a retired postal worker who has diabetes.
Prosecutors said the 50-year-old woman is expected to be hospitalized several days with chest and neck wounds.
Police found her at her home Sunday night after getting a call from her daughter. Prosecutors said the woman had just ended a relationship with Yates, and he stabbed her when he came to her home and she refused to speak with him.
