Tim Skubick: Granholm's 'Dating Game' video is happenstance

LANSING, Mich. (MyFox Detroit) -

The conspiracy theory of history crowd is having a field day with this one.

Last week it was former Gov. Jennifer Granholm making headlines with her over-the-top Democratic convention speech and now this.

Making the rounds on YouTube is her 1978 appearance on the Dating Game.

And the theorists are going, this is obviously a coordinated effort to boost her chances of landing a job with the Obama administration, if there is another one, or an attempt to beef up her ratings on her cable TV show, or lay the groundwork for another TV gig if and when her current show is scrubbed next month as some expect.

The timing, some say, is not accidental.

Sorry folks, but it appears its all happenstance, but very entertaining nonetheless.

After she left home, against her parents advice that she should go to college, the single-minded teenager had her heart set on landing some gig in Hollywood. With hopes running high that she might be discovered, her agent booked her for the Dating Game and she sass-shayed onto the set to interview three eligible bachelors.

Decked out in snug fitting blue jeans with thin suspenders and a blouse that zippered down the front, for obvious reasons, and long red fingernails, Ms. Granholm was ready and eager.  Oh, did we mention her Big Hair ala Farrah Fawcett?

She bubbled, which is what she still does, she laughed and winked, which she no longer does, and she picked bachelor No. 2…a fellow actor-to-be.

But alas she was not discovered, never went on the weekend date with the schlub and went on to Harvard and you know the rest.

However, one look at the tape confirms why the state Republicans looked high and low for this tape to use against her when she finally got around to running for governor in 2002.

The anti-Granholm commercials would have been a pic of her with the Big Hair and the question, do you want this in the governor's chair?

But alas it was nowhere to be found until one of the contestants on the show recognized the blond at the DNC convention,  hauled out the VHS tape of the show and plunked it on the Internet and the rest is history.

The I's have it. Here we go with the popular wisdom schtick again. It says that independent voters hold the key to the outcome in the race for governor.

There is a frantic game of "my list is bigger than your list" going on in this town as the two main combatants to become the next speaker of the Michigan House are trying to one-up each other.
