New England Aquarium working to save rare leatherback turtle

Posted: Updated:

TRURO (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) Employees at the New England aquarium are working to save the life of a 7-foot-long male turtle that washed up on Cape Cod this week.

Members of the Mass. Audubon Sanctuary found a 655-pound leatherback sea turtle beached near Pamet Harbor in Truro on Wednesday night.

On Thursday morning, the Audubon Sanctuary and the International Fund for Animal Welfare were able to move the massive turtle into an IFAW vehicle. He was then transported to the New England Aquarium's Marine Animal Care Center in Quincy.

Veterinarians at the center concluded that the turtle was underweight and lethargic. They quickly administered treatment for dehydration, trauma, and shock.

The turtle also lost nearly 40-percent of one of its flippers. Veterinarians believe the injury may have been caused by something like a lobster pot or a boat mooring and not a predatory fish.

Veterinarians say the turtle's prognosis is poor, but they are working around the clock to save him. This is only the fifth time in 40 years that Mass. has seen the live stranding of a leatherback turtle.
