ANDOVER (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - A cat that suffered second-degree burns in a barn fire more than two weeks ago is expected to survive, thanks to a pig.
A three-alarm fire destroyed Perry Hill Farm's 10,000-square-foot barn and killed 14 horses on Sept. 6.
Harriet Finks and her daughter Elissa Finks, the owners of the farm, thought their three cats had also died in the fire. But their pet pig, Miss Colby, let them know their 6-year-old cat, Gumbo, had survived. The 1,000 pig headed for the wreckage of the barn and then went over to a pile of rocks. That's where Gumbo was found.
All four of his paws, both ears and one side of his body were burned. He could not walk when he first got to Andover Animal Hospital, but he is now recovering. Gumbo has undergone debriding surgery and his wounds were cleaned and flushed.
Gumbo's sister, Gidget, was also found after the fire. She suffered burns, but was expected to leave the hospital soon.
