Varitek to work alongside Cherington in new role with the Red Sox
Jason Varitek has been named Special Assistant to the General Manager of the Boston Red Sox.
Red Sox GM and Executive Vice President Ben Cherington made the announcement about the former Red Sox catcher on Thursday afternoon.
Cherington praised Varitek in a press release before explaining his new role with the team.
"He will be involved in a number of areas including Major League personnel decisions, evaluations, and mentorship and instruction of young players. We are fortunate to have him in this role," says Cherington.
Jason Varitek was named the Red Sox Rookie of the Year in 1998 and remained an integral part of the team up until his retirement in 2012.
