Candidate Bio: Jan Schakowsky - 9th District

Posted: Updated:

Jan Schakowsky is a Democratic congresswoman who has represented Illinois' 9th district since 1998 and will run again in the 2012 general election against Republican Timonthy Wolfe.

Schakowsky is known for her victories in helping abused women and children gain federal assistance, increasing housing opportunities for low-income people, and supporting small business owners. She was also recently appointed by House Speaker Pelosi to serve on the House Select Committee on Intelligence.

The 9th district includes all of Evanston, Skokie, Niles, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove, Park Ridge, and Norridge. Parts of Wilmette, Northfield, Gleview, Golf, Rosemont, Des Plaines, and the North Side of Chicago are included as well.

On the Issues

Energy & Environment: Having lived near Lake Michigan for her entire life, Schakowsky knows first hand how important it is to protect our nation's natural resources. Today, our nation faces unprecedented environmental and energy challenges. As a member of the Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition, as well as a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Jan is committed to ensuring that Congress passes legislation that ensures that our national treasures, like Michigan, remain intact for generations to enjoy. Senior Citizens: As the Co-Chair of the Democratic Seniors Task Force in the House of Representatives, Schakowsky promises to continue her commitment to advocate for older Americans in her district and across the country. Her advocacy for seniors goes back more than 25 years when she was Director of the Illinois State Council of Senior Citizens. Well before she was a senior myself, she worked to ensure that the voices of older Americans were heard, their concerns were put before policymakers, and their needs were met. As Co-Chair of the Seniors Task Force, she is very proud to join with her Democratic colleagues to continue carrying on that same work in Congress. Read more...

Social Security: Social Security is not in crisis. Today, the Social Security Trust Fund has a reserve of $2.5 trillion which will grow to $4.3 trillion by the end of 2023. Schakowsky believes that we need to make changes to Social Security to ensure it can pay full benefits and remain solvent over the next 75 years. With relatively small changes, we can ensure that Social Security will be able to pay full benefits through the rest of this century. Read more...

Immigration: As a first-generation American, Jan knows first hand the tremendous contributions immigrants have made to our nation. The 9th Congressional District of Illinois is one of the most diverse in the country. In fact, 40% of our residents speak a language other than English at home and one-third came as immigrants. As a nation and a community, we are indebted to the immigrants who came here to make a better life for their families, bringing with them their dreams, their culture (including great food), and commitment to hard work. Contracting: The United States needs to end its over-reliance on private, for-profit contractors without whom our military and intelligence community could not function. There are as many contractors as there are uniformed military personnel in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Schakowsky is one of the few members of Congress who has focused particularly on the over 27,000 armed private security contractors in Iraq and Afghanistan who work for companies like the infamous Blackwater.
