A traffic stop involving a New York State Police trooper ended with a deadly shooting.

It happened Thursday evening in Newburgh.

Police say at about 7:40 p.m., trooper David B. Ruderfer, 31, stopped a black 1993 Lexus on State Route 32, near State Route 300, in Newburgh.

At some point, the driver, William C. Baynes, 51, of Newburgh, got into a physical altercation with the trooper on the shoulder of the road.

During the struggle, police say that Ruderfer fired his state-issued Glock .45.  The bullet went into Baynes' belly.

Baynes was taken to St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital where he died.

Ruderfer, an eight year veteran of the force, was also taken to the hospital for injures he received during the altercation.

An investigation into the shooting is being conducted by the Orange County District Attorney's Office and the state police.
