DARTMOUTH (AP) - Federal immigration officials have transferred 63 of
their detainees that were being held at the Bristol County jail following a
disturbance by inmates at the facility.
A spokesman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says the agency was
concerned about the safety and security of its detainees and anticipates a
quick resolution to the issue.
Inmates at the Dartmouth jail damaged sprinkler heads last week to protest
an order by Sheriff Thomas Hodgson that they be confined to their cells
immediately after the evening meal.
Hodgson, in a funding dispute with Gov. Deval Patrick, said the step was
taken because his department can't afford to pay overtime to guards to monitor
Hodgson tells The Standard Times the transfer of the federal detainees is costing $6,000 per day.
