In court on Thursday Bob Bashara admitted he tried to hire someone to hire alleged hit man Joe Gentz. "I foolishly and regrettably offered to pay Steve Tibaudo to find someone to kill Joseph Gentz" Bashara said.
Gentz is the man who investigators say killed Bashara's wife Jane last January and left her body inside her Mercedes on Detroit's east side. Bashara reaching a deal with prosecutors that he would be sentenced to prison no less than four years and no more than seven years. Fox 2 Legal Analyst Charlie Langton says if Bashara had been convicted of that charge he could've been looking at the rest of his life behind bars.
In the solicitation to commit murder case, prosecutors had plenty of evidence against Bashara. after he was caught on tape hiring someone to take out Joe Gentz. Back in June he sought out the owner of Steve's Furniture and Appliance in Detroit, wanting him to act as the middle man. They would meet several times, their conversations recorded and so was the exchange of money. Bashara didn't know Steven Tibaudo was working with authorities and would eventually testify against him.
As for the murder of Jane Bashara, right now Bashara's former handyman Joe Gentz is the only one facing charges. But all along Gentz has told investigators Bashara hired him to commit the crime in exchange for a used Cadillac. Bashara has only been called a 'person of interest' in his wife's homicide, but Langton believes the prosecution is still building it's case. "Even though Bob Bashara plead guilty to hiring a hit man to kill Joe Gentz, I can see the prosecutors office bringing charges of murder. It didn't happen today, but it certainly could," Langton said.
Tibaodo says he's happy Bashara plead guilty, but he is not ready to talk yet because he may be called to testify in the future if Bashara is charged with his wife's murder. In the only comment on the case the Wayne County Prosecutor's office released a statement that said, in part, the penalty for this crime is any term of years up to life in prison. So far there's been no comment from Gentz or his attorney.
Bashara is expected to be back in court for sentencing November 20.
