Bielat cancels television ad, takes aim at Kennedy in web video

Posted: Updated:

(FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - Republican congressional candidate Sean Bielat has cancelled some local television advertising starting Oct. 22, but his campaign maintains that does not signal trouble.

"As money continues to come in from our online messaging efforts, this will allow us to make additional media buys," Bielat's campaign communications director, Sarah Rumpf, told FOX 25's Sharman Sacchetti.

Bielat is running against Joe Kennedy III for the 4th Congressional District seat. So far, Kennedy has been able to outraise his competitor by millions.

Rumpf would not comment on specific media plans, but said "our campaign is making spending decisions and having to prioritize what we must do and what we would like to do," adding "we've never expected to compete with Kennedy dollar for dollar."

Rumpf says Bielat's campaign is ahead of where he was at this point in 2010, when he waged a spirited campaign against Rep. Barney Frank. She also points to grassroots support.

This new development comes on the same day Bielat released a new web video criticizing Kennedy as a well-funded candidate who is running on the legacy of his relatives, instead of his own record.

Last year, Frank announced that he would be retiring in November due to redistricting. He said he could not put the effort into campaigning in a new district with hundreds of thousands of new constituents. He said it would have been a tough race, and he didn't like having to raise money.

Kennedy and Bielat are scheduled to debate on Oct. 24, on the FOX 25 Morning News.

The Kennedy campaign told FOX 25 that it does not have any comment on the story.
