PLYMOUTH, Mich. -- Sunday evening, Sparrs Florist near the intersection of Lilley and Joy reported a disturbance, a man on the property smashing windows and carrying a weapon.

Michigan State Police say that the man causing the disturbance refused to surrender when police arrived, instead brandishing a tire iron and lunging at an officer.  That officer fired a single, fatal shot to the suspect's chest.

The City of Plymouth Police Department has issued a statement confirming an on-duty, officer-involved shooting.

The incident is under investigation by Michigan State Police.

Plymouth Police say they were assisting officers from Plymouth Township.
