The gloves were off at Tuesday night's second presidential debate, and we saw a much more spirited President Barack Obama.

This debate was much different than the last one.

In the Denver debate, some considered Obama's performance to be weak, and there was an expectation for the president Tuesday night in New York to take a stronger stance. Many believe the president accomplished that.

And former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney held his own, too.

Questions from an undecided audience at Hofstra University brought up issues like oil prices, energy policies, our tax structure, immigration , the recent massacre in Libya and, of course, the economy and unemployment rate.

The evening began with a question from a college student who wanted to know if he could assure his parents that he'd have a job when he graduated so he could pay off those student loans. Of course, that led into a debate over the unemployment rate.

Romney said fewer people are working now than when Obama went into office, noting that the unemployment rate plus that many more people have stopped looking for work. He noted that he has a five-point plan for 12 million new jobs.

But Obama said Romney really has a one-point plan, a philosophy we've seen for the last decade and he's been fighting against for the last four years, adding that America doesn't need to go back to the policies that got us here.

As you can see, the candidates went much harder at each other than the first debate.

But perhaps one of the most contentious moments of the night was a discussion about Libya. Romney challenged Obama, saying that the president took nearly a week to call the killing of four Americans a terror attack.

The president disagreed, and moderator Candy Crawley did a quick fact check and ended the match.

FOX 29's Stephanie Esposito has more on the debate in this video report.
