DETROIT -- Police stopped short of saying there is a serial rapist on the loose in southwest Detroit, but people who live in the community say there is definitely a reason to be concerned.  There is a community center in Patton Park just a few feet away from the place where a woman was brutally attacked.

"Her face is totally crushed," a family member told us.  "Her arms are broke because you can tell she was trying to fight back."

45-year-old Tammy Freeman was brutally raped and mutilated.  Doctors say she likely won't survive.  A family member said she is the latest victim of a killer lurking near Patton Park in southwest Detroit.

"I just heard that there (were) two other victims and the same thing basically happened to them and they died," she explained.  "They're dragging women into Patton Park.  They're raping them with objects, beating them to death.  Something needs to be done."

Residents told FOX 2 at least two of the victims were prostitutes.

Becky Dorie lives across the street from Patton Park.  She believes she heard Freeman scream Saturday night.  Now afraid for her family, she started a neighborhood watch.

"We're trying to get everybody aware of what's going on and to watch out for their children," she said.  "This guy is doing what he's doing between the hours of 9:30 and maybe 1:00 a.m."

Detroit Police say officers from their Sex Crimes Unit are working around the clock.  This month, police arrested three men for committing sex crimes in neighborhoods near southwest Detroit, but police confirm they are not the men who attacked Tammy Freeman.
