PHILADELPHIA -

Shovels hitting the ground Thursday at the Navy Yard in Philadelphia marked the start of a project to build a new hotel in the area.

Mayor Michael Nutter was part of the groundbreaking ceremony at the site of the first hotel to be built at the Navy Yard.

Construction will soon begin on the $34 million, five-story Courtyard Marriot.

The project is expected to create 400 construction jobs and 50 permanent jobs when it opens next year.
