'Sonic Boom' Rocks South Jersey Residents

Posted: Updated:
VENTNOR, N.J. -

Did you feel it?

That's the question neighbors in several South Jersey communities started asking themselves ever since a loud bang followed several seconds of ground shaking around 11am Saturday.

"We heard this rumble. Boom, boom boom," said Joe Longmore of Ventnor City.

He and his wife Tara were enjoying the morning outside in their backyard when jolted by the powerful sound.

"It was totally different.  I never felt anything like that," Tara Longmore said.

Most residents called it a "sonic boom" but the phenomenon lit up social media websites like Facebook and Twitter with many asking if it was an earthquake.

It turned out to be military aircraft flying over water according to several local government officials, but it was enough to get plenty of people talking.

Typically a sonic boom is achieved when something travels through the air faster than the speed of sound, such as a jet.

Officials would not elaborate on the origin of the boom.
