Quinn to formally endorse opponent of expelled state Rep Derrick Smith

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Gov. Pat Quinn on Sunday will formally endorse a candidate running against former state Rep. Derrick Smith, who was expelled from the Illinois House after he was indicted for allegedly taking a bribe from an undercover FBI informant.

Quinn is expected to announce he'll back Lance Tyson in the Nov. 6 election. Tyson, a Democrat who once served as chief of staff to former Cook County Board President Todd Stroger and a one-time aide to former Mayor Richard M. Daley, is running as a third-party candidate under the 10th District Unity Party.

In a statement posted on Tyson's campaign website, Quinn said he was he was proud to endorse Tyson, whom he called the "real Democrat."

Smith did not respond to requests for comment.

Quinn previously attended a fundraiser for Tyson in July and gave a short speech, said Nadja Lalvani, the communication director for Tyson's campaign.

Lalvani said Quinn wanted to make a formal, public endorsement. A poll released in September showed Smith ahead of Tyson by a 48-percent-to-9-percent margin. The automated poll of 556 registered voters had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.15 percentage points.

Last spring, Smith was indicted for allegedly accepting a $7,000 cash bribe from an FBI informant who posed as an intermediary to a daycare operator who wanted a $50,000 state grant.
