A tire apparently fell off the back of a truck on the Schuylkill Expressway, hit a Toyota Prius and bounced up onto a building's roof, resulting in a large hole.
Witnesses say a tire that fell from the sky and crashed onto the roof of the Philadelphia Housing Authority training facility on Vare Avenue sounded like a "bomb."
It sent workers inside heading for the doors and trying to figure out the mystery of the flying tire.
"We went on the roof and seen that big tire. We though it was an airplane tire," said PHA Supervisor George Johnson.
"They said it was a real big wheel, I don't know," said another PHA worker. "They said it could have come from a plane."
Workers scrambled to the roof where they found a gaping hole and the tire they thought had dropped from a plane. Turns out, it was a truck tire that broke free from a passing tractor trailer and careened off the hood of a Honda Civic. It went airborne, traveling over 30-feet up before crash landing on the roof.
"Something came out of the air, we was wondering why," a PHA employee said.
"You heard the big boom and then just smelled a whole lot of gas so we had to get out of there," he added.
"How a tire from a moving truck lands on our roof I think I probably need a Phd. in physics to figure that out, quite unusual," said PHA Executive Director Kelvin Jeremiah.
The driver of the Honda was taken to the hospital along with a pregnant woman who was riding in the front passenger seat. The impact smashed the hood, the windshield and deployed the airbags.
Back at the PHA building, workers were buzzing about the bizarre incident while PGW workers and investigators from Licenses and Inspections checked out the damage.
"I think we are incredibly fortunate. I think we caught a break this morning," Director Jeremiah added.
"I feel fortunate because we get to go home early and still get paid. That's the fortunate part," a PHA worker said.
The driver of the car that got hit by the flying tire, Kiwon Lee, told Fox 29 over the phone that he is okay. His wife is still being checked out at the Hospital Of the University of Pennsylvania.
