Man Who Drove Onto Philly Airport Runway Sentenced To 16 Mos.

PHILADELPHIA -

The man who crashed his Jeep through a locked gate at Philadelphia International Airport and made it onto a runway was sentenced to 16 months in prison Wednesday.

According to the United States Attorney's Office, 25-year-old Kenneth Richard Mazik was sentenced for disrupting the services at the airport and endangering the safety at the airport.

Mazik's car crashed through the airport gate on March 1 as a plane was preparing to land.

The U.S. Attorneys' Office says he damaged two of the runway threshold lights, then sped down the runway as the plane was approaching from his rear.

The FAA Traffic Controller was forced to divert the plane and also had to stop another passenger plane from landing because of the incident.

The car then sped off the runway, narrowly missing an airport antenna, only to cross a second active runway while being chased by Philadelphia Police.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says the incident closed the airport for 30 minutes.

A U.S. District Court judge also ordered Mazik to pay $91,092 restitution to the airport, the FAA and to US Airways.
