Illinois lawmakers paychecks cost taxpayers $15 million

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Illinois lawmakers cost taxpayers nearly $15 million last year.

Those costs include salaries, stipends, allowances and reimbursements.

The numbers come from the office of Illinois Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka. They look at financial records from 169 current and 45 former lawmakers.

About $11 million in expenses came from salaries.

Another $3 million was from allowances and leadership stipends.

Those stipends count toward a legislator's pension adding as much as 40 percent to their base salary.

One Illinois lawmaker tried to get rid of committee leadership stipends but the measure was killed by a Senate subcommittee.

Illinois lawmakers are among the highest paid in the country. Only New York and Pennsylvania have higher base salaries.
