11th District candidates clash in debate

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

The candidates in the hotly contested 11th Congressional District race faced off on immigration, the federal budget and gay marriage.

In a debate Wednesday with Democrat Bill Foster, Republican Congresswoman Judy Biggert said allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire would be catastrophic. However, Foster said the cuts have not stimulated the economy nor created jobs.

The candidates also addressed the Dream Act, which allows illegal immigrant youth brought into the U.S. by their parents to be eligible for citizenship if they join the military or earn a college degree.

Biggert said no one should be given a leg up on obtaining citizenship, while Foster said he supports the act.

On gay marriage, Foster said he supports it, while Biggert said she is moving closer to supporting it.
