Derrick Smith phones into WVON radio, but no answers on bribery charges

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Indicted former state representative Derrick Smith went on the radio Thursday, and refused to answer questions about whether he actually took a bribe.

Smith was on with WVON radio host Cliff Kelley, and his election opponent Lance Tyson.

Smith is accused of taking a $7,000 bribe. He has pleaded not-guilty, and is awaiting trial.

His colleagues in the Illinois General Assembly kicked him out anyway.

"I have not had my day in court. I'm innocent until proven guilty," Smith said on air. "I have not been to court. I don't know when I am going to court."

"They provided due process in the several weeks of hearings, they went through mounds of evidence," Tyson said on air. "They saw video of the FBI agent counting out 1,000; 2,000; 3,000."

Smith is on the ballot as a Democrat. If he wins, the state house can not toss him out again for the same reason, unless he's convicted.

Tyson is running as an independent, but is supported by several top Illinois Democrats, including Governor Quinn.
