Storm could dampen campaigning in US Senate race

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) - The mega-storm that could bring torrential rain to Massachusetts may also end up dampening campaign plans in the U.S. Senate race.

Forecasters say the storm could reach the state by late Sunday and linger until early Wednesday - just as Republican incumbent Scott Brown and Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren are ramping up for a last week of campaigning.

Their final debate is scheduled for Tuesday.

Both Brown and Warren said their top concern was the safety of residents.

Warren said she was pleased with the state's preparations while Brown said the security of those in Massachusetts was his top priority.

Democratic Gov. Deval Patrick said he's cancelled a campaign trip to Florida on Sunday on behalf of President Barack Obama and would reevaluate his political plans for later in the week depending on the storm's severity.
