NEWBURY (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - After reviewing several conference calls with the National Weather Service and Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, the town of Newbury and the City of Newburyport have instituted a voluntary evacuation order for Plum Island and low lying areas beginning Sunday at 7 p.m.
The American Red Cross will open a regional shelter at the Newbury Elementary School on Hanover Street beginning at 8 p.m. Sunday. A pet shelter will also be opened at 8 p.m. at the Newburyport Animal Shelter on Perry Way in Newburyport.
Officials urge residents of these areas to evacuate before 9 a.m. on Monday because emergency services may not be able to access Plum Island for several hours at the height of the storm.
Residents in need of assistance should call the Newburyport Police Department at 978-462-4411.
Additionally, all public schools are cancelled for Monday, trash collection is also suspended, and access to Plum Island will be restricted to residents only.
