Sheriff offers safety tips for Halloween

Posted: Updated:
BARTOW COUNTY, Ga. -

As children are planning their final costumes and thinking about how much candy they'll collect this Halloween, parents need to keep safety in mind.

"They can't wait. They already have their costumes picked out and they're ready to go on Wednesday," said parent Stephanie Paris.

Sheriff Clark Millsap of the Bartow County Sheriff's Office says trick or treating is supposed to be a fun night for kids.

"They go out and they dress up and they get to get candy. But it's still one of those things that makes you just scratch your head why people could be mean to kids," said Millsap.

Millsap says it's up to you to keep your kids safe. He says start with their costumes.

"Make sure they got on a really florescent uniform or outfit or some kind that will reflect light," suggested Millsap.

He says have plenty of flashlights on hand and have your route mapped out ahead of time. He suggests having your kids travel in a group with an adult.  If you're driving through neighborhoods on Halloween, slow down and pay attention.

Parents, no matter how much your children beg, keep the treats in the bag until back in the house.

"Don't open any candy until you get back home. Don't take any apples. Don't take any oranges. Or something that anybody can slip a razor blade or other foreign object into," advised Millsap.

Millsap says there haven't been any incidents in recent years in Bartow County, you should never let down your guard.

"Just be safe and use your head and a lot of common sense comes into play," said Millsap.

Now is also a good time to rethink your child's costume. While masks certainly add to the authenticity of the outfit, they can often restrict breathing and make it hard for them to see.
