Hurricane Sandy made landfall shortly after 8pm along the New Jersey Coast. The impact of this huge storm and the widespread damage it left behind is the lead story as Good Day went on air at 4:00 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Thousands are without power.  Trees are down.  Power lines are down.  Hundreds of roads remain closed.

Last night, in Atlantic City, Fox 29's Dave Schratwieser reported significant flooding.  Cars could be seen stranded in several inches of standing water and some cars were even floating in high flood waters.

Atlantic City Electric reports thousands of outages along the Jersey Shore.

In Cape May County, officials report Sandy made its way through between 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Monday night, dropping more than 8 inches of rain.

A storm surge at one point was reported to be up to 15 feet.

County officials say the Barrier Islands are seeing extreme beach erosion.

This morning, Steve Keeley was live on the heavily damaged AC boardwalk.  His live shots were dramatic as there were pieces of the boardwalk lodged in people's homes.

In Pennsylvania:

Hundreds of trees have been torn down by strong winds.

As of early Tuesday morning, PECO reports that a total of 585,000 homes are without power.

In Philadelphia, Mayor Nutter told reporters that as of 10:15 p.m. more than 40,000 homes were without power in the city, while 437,000 homes were without power across the region.

Fox 29's Karen Hepp was live on Tuesday morning on Delaware Avenue, under the Ben Franklin Bridge.  She was in knee-deep water as the mighty Delaware flowed up onto the busy street.

In Delaware:

In Rohoboth Beach, FOX 29's Dave Kinchen covered the arrival of Sandy.  The waves were incredible high as they pounded the shoreline.

Several thousand customers are in the dark.

Fox 29's Claudia Gomez was up early Tuesday morning surveying the damage in Dewey Beach.
