DETROIT -- Michigan utilities say high winds knocked out power to thousands of homes and businesses as the effects of the Eastern Seaboard's severe weather move through the state.

DTE Energy Co. says roughly 70,000 of its customers were without power early Tuesday. CMS Energy Corp.'s Consumers Energy unit reported 9,000 Michigan customers were out Monday night.

Weather Authority Ben Bailey says the worst of the wind is over. However, strong breezes are still expected throughout southeast Michigan Tuesday as wind advisories continue through 1 p.m. Counties bordering Lake Huron remain under a high wind warning until 1 p.m. with expected gusts reaching 55 to 65 mph.

As a result of the high winds and power outages, numerous schools were closed throughout southeast Michigan on Tuesday. In Harper Woods, officials say limited power has closed city hall for the day. All 911 calls will be transferred to the Grosse Pointe police department.

Rain showers and cool temperatures are also forecasted for the day with high temps reaching 46 degrees.

FOX 2's Al Allen reports hundreds of flights to the east coast are canceled on Tuesday. Airports including Newark, JFK and La Guardia in New York City are closed.

The National Weather Service says wave heights of up to 23 feet were reported on southern Lake Huron, with waves from 24 feet to 35 feet forecast. High wind warnings were in effect along parts of Michigan's eastern Lower Peninsula.

Waves from 22 feet to 35 feet were forecast for Lake Michigan. High wind warnings were in effect in West Michigan.
