LEWES, Del. -

When Sandy began her approach toward Delaware on Monday, the gigantic waves at Rehoboth Beach appeared to be an ominous indication of what was to come.

But by early Tuesday morning, with no signs of any major damage on the Rehoboth boardwalk, it quickly became clear Sandy showed mercy, at least here.

In Dewey Beach, rocks and sand in the center of Route 1 showed where the ocean and the bay met in the middle of the road at the height of the storm.

Still, residents managed to escape catastrophic damage.

In Lewes, just north of Rehoboth, flood waters closed down some roads near the beach.

Still, even as water flowed near their homes, residents say the storm could have been much worse.
