A transformer that caught fire outside of an assisted living facility in Montgomery County forced the evacuation of more than 70 elderly residents Tuesday.
Fox 29's Bruce Gordan reports the transformer behind the Luther Park Assisted Living Facility caught fire around 2 p.m.
Fox 29 was told it had been smoking as early as Tuesday morning.
The transformer wasn't in use as the assisted living facility was using a generator.
Seventy-three residents were evacuated and were taken to another building on campus.
The granddaughter of one of the residents says the transformer fire sounded like a loud "bang," prompting everyone to start screaming.
PECO is now working to determine the cause of the fire. It's possible the fire may have been connected to water getting inside the transformer.

Rain moved in Saturday afternoon and the chance for it will stick around through the seven day forecast.
It becomes very unsettled across our area with clounds and showers again Sunday. The best chance for rain is in the morning and afternoon thunderstorms are possible towards our south.
Sunday is cool but we do warm up well into the 80s by Tuesday. With the warm weather comes a better chance for thunderstorms.
