BARNEGAT, N.J. -

The cleanup process for residents in Barnegat, New Jersey has just begun after Sandy made its way through, but many are learning there's not much left to clean up.

Barnegat Police say 19 single family homes and four multi-unit homes are now unsafe to live in.

Mark Elwood tells FOX 29 reporter Omari Fleming that he's afraid to see his mom's reaction to the damage of their home.

Elwood saw the family home for the first time since Sunday's mandatory evacuation.

He says his mom was holding onto the home because it reminded her of her husband, who died just a year ago.

Elwood calls the damage "heartbreaking."

In Waretown, Sandy swamped the marina, tossed boats around and even sent one crashing into a home.

Another ran into Laura Kenney's house shortly after her husband swam their daughters next door to higher ground.

Kenney says at one point the water came up to her chest.

Now that the water has receded, she says the family is back in their home.
