Gandy's Beach Homes Gutted By Sandy

Posted: Updated:
GANDY'S BEACH, N.J. -

A Delaware Bay community ravaged by Sandy that residents haven't been able to see yet.

We had a chance to tour the damage in the small neighborhood of Gandy's Beach, N.J.

There, Sandy's wicked winds and fierce flooding changed homes, giving some of them a bay-front view the owners never dreamed of or wanted.

FOX 29's Omari Fleming shows some of the hardest-hit homes in the small neighborhood in Downe Township.

At least 25 waterfront homes sustained damage. At least four of them are a total loss. They were literally ripped apart, some cut in half and gutted by Sandy's fury.

Mayor Robert Campbell sent an estimate to FEMA saying the township suffered $30 million in damage.

Boats were washed-up and abandoned in neighboring marshlands. Cove Road buckled and collapsed under the weight of Sandy's flooding.

Campbell said they had 10- to 20-foot waves over the bulkheads.

Boarded-up homes wilted to Sandy's mercy. Their patios and balconies were reduced to rubble. Even garage doors surrendered to the super storms will.

A cavalry of bulldozers worked late into the night Thursday repairing the retaining wall Sandy scattered like Legos – each block about 2.5 tons.

Gandy's Beach remains closed to residents until Cove Road and power lines are repaired.

The mayor said he's just thankful everyone heeded the mandatory evacuation, and that these homes were Sandy's only casualties.
