Avalon Residents See Hurricane Sandy Damage, Start Cleanup

Posted: Updated:
AVALON, N.J. -

When David Brennan and his son Conner pulled into their driveway in Avalon after driving in from Illinois Friday morning, they found quite a mess.

"Everything was floating as you can imagine probably during the storm," Brennan said.

The Brennan's spent hours clearing out their garage. Almost everything in it was soaked from several feet of water courtesy of Hurricane Sandy.

"Find the stuff full of water. Getting rid of it, kind of muddling through the mud," he added.

Right next door, the same story. Water damage everywhere.

"Everything's gotta come out -- the washer, anything running on electric is pretty much shot," said another neighbor.

Over on Ocean Drive, Greg Marsich was hauling away wheel barrels filled with dune grass that piled up on deck out back of his bay-front home. He employed a big fan to dry the place out.

A few feet away, huge docks were tossed around like building blocks during Sandy's fury Monday night. The cleanup here could take days if not weeks.

Asked what kind of stuff got damaged, Marisch said, "A full refrigerator, coke machine, ice machine and then again all the kids toys, rafts and furniture we had stored."

"The water came up almost to my windows. I'd say about two feet inside," neighbor Mike Glynn said as he described the water damage from Sandy.

Across town, a big front-end loader hauled runaway docks through the streets of Avalon to a parking lot where at least a dozen other unclaimed docks were being stored.

Despite the damage, people here felt spared by Sandy.

"There's been sacrifices, loss of life. It's sad. Very sad," Marsich said.
