DOVER, Del. -

A 37-year-old man died and an 11-year-old girl were rushed to the hospital after two cars collided along Rt. 1 in Dover, Delaware late Saturday night.

According to Delaware State Police, the accident happened a mile south of Dover Air Force Base shortly after 11 p.m.

Police say a car was traveling northbound on Rt. 1 as another car was headed south.

Both cars swerved simultaneously then struck head on and burst into places, police said.

The driver of the car traveling northbound died as a result of the crash while the 11-year-old passenger was taken to Kent General Hospital. Police say she was later flown to The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

The driver of the car that was headed southbound was taken to a hospital with what police say were non-life threatening injuries.

The crash left Rt. 1 closed for five hours as troopers worked to investigate the scene.

It's not yet clear what caused the crash.
