NEEDHAM (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) – Students at St. Joseph's Elementary School in Needham are heading to the polls on Monday to vote in an election that could decide the new state dish of Massachusetts.

The second-grade students will be choosing between Boston baked beans and New England clam chowder. The students will then go to the state legislature in an attempt to make the winner official.

"Boston baked beans and New England clam chowder have long been traditional favorites in New England, and we thought they would be excellent choices for a state dish for Massachusetts," said Betsy Harrigan, one of the teachers involved in the election. "Throughout the weeks leading up to the election, students have been introduced to new vocabulary, designed campaign posters and learned details about each of the candidates. It's been a terrific project for the students, and we're all excited for the outcome."

The students learned that the Commonwealth did not have a state dish while researching the importance of symbols in various cultures.

The students will be casting their ballot in a realistic voting area complete with ballot box and bunting.
