In NY, Ready To Race But No Marathon To Run

Posted: Updated:

Tens of thousands of would-be New York Marathon runners were in Manhattan this weekend with no race to run.

The world's largest race was canceled Friday to allow city resources to focus on Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts.

Most people seemed to understand, but some international runners say they wish the decision could have been made sooner.

Fox's Matt Gerien reports around 40,000 runners were already in the city when the race was called off.

Some runners took advantage of the time in New York.

An Italian running team says they wanted to volunteer to help storm victims.

Another runner who traveled from Singapore says they wondered how a race could still go on with so many homes in Staten Island under water.

The runners will get an automatic entry for next year's race, many tell Fox they'll come back.

But some say this was their one shot at running in the New York Marathon.
