Three soldiers from New York died in a bomb explosion in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense said the three died of wounds suffered on Nov. 3, 2012, when an improvised explosive device exploded in the Paktia province.

The three were identified as Staff Sgt. Dain T. Venne, 29, of Port Henry, Spc. Ryan P. Jayne, 22, of Campbell, and Spc. Brett E. Gornewicz, 27, of Alden.

The soldiers were attached to the 444th unit in Afghanistan. They were members of the 411th Engineering Brigade, New Windsor, N.Y.

"Our condolence and prayers go out to the families of these Soldiers killed in this IED incident." Said Maj. Gen. William Buckler, Jr. "We are here to support them."

The soldiers had been deployed to Afghanistan on June 1, 2012, to perform route clearing activities.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered flags on state government buildings to be flown at half-staff on November 7 in their honor.

"Along with all New Yorkers, I mourn the deaths of Specialist Gornewicz, Specialist Jayne and Staff Sgt. Venne," Cuomo said. "These young men were all volunteers who lived and worked in our communities and gave their lives for our great country. We extend our condolences to their friends, their families, and their fellow Soldiers."

Venne was a combat engineer and had three previous deployments. Venne had more than a decade of service.

Gornewicz was a combat engineer and had two previous deployments. Gornewicz was a 6 year veteran.

Jayne was a combat engineer and had one previous deployment. Jayne was in the service for two years.

Funeral arrangements were unknown.
