LONG BEACH ISLAND, N.J. -

Emergency officials ordered residents in several areas down the shore, including the barrier islands in the central and northern part of New Jersey, to evacuate ahead of Wednesday's storm.

Officials say Sandy left the coast more vulnerable and it wasn't safe to stay.

FOX 29's Stephanie Salvatore reports residents in Long Beach Island seemed to take their advice.

As the storm made its way through the area Wednesday evening, LBI looked more like a ghost town.

The only people in sight were military personnel and emergency responders, who say their job becomes a lot easier when people take the advice of officials and evacuate.

In Long Beach Island, emergency officials tell FOX 29 three to four families had to be rescued in the middle of Sandy. Officials say having to perform a rescue in the middle of severe weather can put everyone's safety in jeopardy.

As a second storm makes its way through the area, the question on the minds of many residents is when they'll be able to return to their homes.
