Survey: higher price of turkey increases cost of Thanksgiving dinner

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) If you're headed to the grocery store in the coming days to purchase a Thanksgiving turkey don't be surprised to see a bigger number on the price tag than in previous years.

A new survey by the American Farm Bureau Federation has revealed that the price of turkey is up 3-percent from a year ago.

The cost of turkey will have a modest impact on the overall cost of Thanksgiving dinner, with the average 10-serving meal costing $49.85.

Experts say the increased price of turkey has nothing to do with a shortage since turkey supplies in cold storage are up 5 to 6-percent this year. They say the increased price is likely due to competing meats selling at a higher price, which has increased demand for turkey.

The American Farm Bureau came to these conclusions by surveying volunteer shoppers from around the country. To learn more, click here.
