Mass. state police on patrol in New Jersey

Posted: Updated:

STURBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) - Massachusetts state police have sent a contingent of troopers to New Jersey to help with patrols in areas that saw heavy damage from Superstorm Sandy.

Twenty-five troopers left the Sturbridge barracks and arrived in New Jersey on Saturday for a weeklong deployment to help local police with daily law enforcement duties, at the request of New Jersey emergency management officials.

The group of troopers includes members of the state police Special Emergency Response Team. They will be staying at Fort Dix during the week.

The troopers will be helping out on the New Jersey shore, where thousands of homes and businesses will be without power indefinitely because they were heavily damaged.
