Frank asks Feds to respect states’ rights on legalized pot

Posted: Updated:

U.S. Rep. Barney Frank has asked President Obama to respect the rights of states who have legalized marijuana.

Frank and Rep. Ron Paul sent a letter to the president asking him to "respect the wishes of the voters of Colorado and Washington." The two states legalized marijuana last week.

Recreational marijuana use remains illegal under federal law. Paul and Frank have sponsored a bill that would legalize it.

"We have sponsored legislation at the federal level to remove criminal penalties for the use of marijuana because of our belief in individual freedom," the letter states.

Frank and Paul urged Obama to respect the right of states to set their own policies.
