(WJBK) -

It's an event to raise awareness of the work by Amara Conservation and help protect a critical Kenyan ecosystem and its elephants.

Thursday, November 29th at the Necto in Ann Arbor from 5:30pm - 7:30pm.  Get in for a minimum donation of $20.

The evening will include drinks, appetizers, a silent auction with items from Africa and Michigan, and an informative video presentation on their work to help the people and wildlife of Kenya.

Amara Conservation was founded in 2001 by Ann Arbor native Lori Bergemann. The non-profit 501(c)3 works with the people who live with the elephants around National Parks in Kenya by educating them on the ecosystem in which they live and how it is impacted by human activities. Amara brings an understanding of the importance and value of the wildlife to the people of Kenya. Amara's work is focused around the Tsavo National Parks, which hold the largest elephant population in Kenya and is critical to their long term survival.

Bergemann points out that at the current rate of slaughter, elephants in the wild will be extinct within ten years, emphasizing the importance of educating the people who live with the elephants as the solution to their protection. Amara uses educational films to offer solutions.
