TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - The group that is licensed to run New Jersey's first legal medical marijuana dispensary is paranoid over sales taxes.
Greenleaf Compassion Center co-founder Joe Stevens tells The Star-Ledger the only thing keeping the group from opening in a Montclair storefront is the state's decision on whether it must charge sales taxes.
But the state Health Department says the shop can open now even if the sales tax issue is not decided for good.
State Sen. Nicholas Scutari, a main sponsor of the law allowing pot for patients, says he intended for cannabis to be subject to a 7% sales tax. But the law is silent on the issue of sales taxes.
