Mass. health officials investigating patient exhibiting symptoms of meningitis

Posted: Updated:

ANDOVER (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) The Department of Public Health is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to investigate the case of a patient from Massachusetts who says she has fungal meningitis.

A spokesperson at the DPH says that this is not a confirmed case of fungal meningitis at this time and reiterates that Massachusetts did not receive any contaminated products from the New England Compounding Center.

"We are working in collaboration with the CDC as part of their investigation into this case, which is not a confirmed case of fungal meningitis at this time. We have also been in close contact with the hospital where the patient was treated. While Massachusetts did not receive any of the contaminated lots from NECC, we take all potential cases seriously and this remains under investigation. We wish the patient well in her recovery," reads a statement from the DPH.

The patient at the center of the investigation is a 71-year-old Andover woman.

FOX 25 spoke with a New Hampshire attorney representing six people, including two in Massachusetts, who claim to be infected with fungal meningitis. He says that there are now reports of individual cases beyond what the CDC is recognizing and that includes Massachusetts. He says this is "the tip of the iceberg."

A total of 33 people in 19 states have died and 480 have been infected in a fungal meningitis outbreak linked back to the Framingham-based New England Compounding Center.
