Mass. pastor charged with drunken driving

EAST LONGMEADOW (AP) - A Roman Catholic pastor in Massachusetts whoonce suggested that the pope resign because of the church's handling of theclergy abuse crisis is facing a drunken driving charge after a three-caraccident.

The Republican of Springfield reports that the Rev. James Scahill of St. Michael's Parish in East Longmeadow isexpected to appear in Palmer District Court within the next few days.

Scahill was charged with operating under the influence after a minoraccident in East Longmeadow on Friday afternoon. No one was injured.

The 65-year-old pastor made headlines in 2010 when he said Pope Benedict XVIshould resign for not being truthful about the abuse scandal and for not takingstronger action.

Scahill didn't immediately return a message seeking comment Sunday.
