NYC has fewer food pantries than in 2007

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (AP) -

The Food Bank for New York City, an anti-hunger organization, said the number of food pantries and soup kitchens in New York City is down 25 percent in the last five years.

The report also finds that more people have been coming to emergency food providers since the beginning of the latest recession and that more are also being turned away.

The Food Bank's report is based on information gathered before Superstorm Sandy. But it said the storm illustrated New Yorkers' need for food relief in disasters.

The report called for investment in the network of emergency food providers. It said providers could then be both a short-term solution to hunger and a bridge to longer-term solutions. It said that would also enhance New York's readiness for a disaster.
