Second baby gorilla born at Lincoln Park Zoo

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Lincoln Park Zoo welcomed its second baby western lowlands gorilla in the past two months.

The female gorilla appeared Monday in the arms of her mother, 16-year-old Rollie, according to a Lincoln Park Zoo release.

The baby's father, 23-year-old Kwan, fathered another baby with a different gorilla in October. Bana, 18, gave birth to baby Patty Oct. 11.

The last time the North Side zoo had two baby gorillas was in 2004, the release said. Both those gorillas, Susie and Azizi, still live at the zoo.

"It is so much fun having multiple youngsters in the same troop, not to mention this type of environment will be great for fostering the social development of these new infants," Maureen Leahy, said Curator of Primates, said in the release. "There is a real sense of camaraderie among the adult females, and their babies will have the chance to play together and learn from each other."
