Village clerk offered $700K severance package

LOCH ARBOUR, N.J. (AP) -

Commissioners in a tiny Jersey shore town may launch a probe into a nearly $700,000 severance package for the village clerk.

Loch Arbour's former Board of Trustees cut the deal last year with Lorraine Carafa should the Monmouth County town merge with neighboring Allenhurst.

The Asbury Park Press reports the agreement includes 46 weeks of severance pay at $89,000; 150 days of unused vacation and sick days at $66,000; and fully paid lifetime health benefits for Carafa and her spouse totaling $539,000.

The package doesn't include Carafa's pension.

Carafa declined comment.

Loch Arbour, which has 194 residents, is looking to merge with Allenhurst to ease the high cost of sending children to school in Ocean Township.

Commissioners will vote on the probe on Tuesday night.
