GETTYSBURG, Pa. -

Academy Award-winning director Steven Spielberg celebrated history in Gettysburg on Monday.

On Tuesday, Spielberg – the man behind the new film "Lincoln" – recited the 16th president's most famous speech at the Civil War battlefield.

Spielberg said he felt humbled staring out at the site where so many Americans lost their lives. He was the keynote speaker at an event to mark the anniversary of the Gettysburg Address.

Spielberg told the crowd that Lincoln wanted people to look at themselves and realize the impact they would have on future generations.

Tuesday marked the 149th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address.

This July will mark the 150th anniversary of the actual battle of Gettysburg. Hundreds of thousands of Civil War re-enactors will descend upon the small Pennsylvania town. They will recreate the historic battle that took place on July 1-3 in 1863.

The 150th anniversary celebration and events will take place from July 4-7, 2013.
