SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -- It will soon be winter and that typically means snow, ice, skiing, snowmobiling, school cancellations and snow blowers.  So, how much snow could we get this year in metro Detroit?

I posed that question to Bill Kirk from Weather Trends International.

"We have about 15 snowy periods through this winter.  Almost every month is at average to above average, particularly the January-February-March timeframe.  Definitely an above average snow pattern," he said.

"If you look at just statistics and that's all you were to look at, any time you've had such an extreme winter last year, they're almost always followed by a more extreme one the other way (the next) year.  So we'd be inclined to say more like 53 inches of snow this winter, above average, way more than last year's 26 inches.  So you're definitely going to be using the snow blower this winter."

The average snow fall for our area is 43 inches.
